NTPA Press Release March 2009

NTPA works towards November Launch

Working towards November Launch

16/03/09

The National Trans (gender) Police Association is working towards its official launch in November 2009. The NTPA was formed in January 2008 after it was identified that there was a need for a professional association within the police for those with a gender identity issue. Currently the NTPA has a membership of around 70 members, consisting of police officers and staff from forces throughout the UK.

The NTPA also aspires to speak for the wider trans community on police related matters. It is hoped that it will become a contact between the transgender community in the UK, and the police service. The association is recognised and supported by both ACPO and ACPO (Scotland), and the National Police Improvement Agency.

The NTPA is planning to hold an official launch in November 2009 at the Police Staff College, Bramshill in Hampshire. It is hoped that it will be seen as a positive step for the UK transgender community.

NTPA spokesperson, Martha Hand, said: The time is now right for this association to be formed. There is clearly a need for the misunderstandings surrounding gender dysphoria and gender identity to be addressed. We are very much in the public domain, and are looking to foster better role models of what transgender means.

Dru Willcock, Chair of the NTPA, added: We are adding to the tools that the Police Service already use. We not only give support to transgender staff in the UK police service, but also aim to foster an understanding to help fight the lack of knowledge surrounding our condition.

It is estimated that there are around one in 200 people in the UK who suffer from a gender identity issue. However given the reluctance of Trans people to report incidents it is difficult to determine how many experience discrimination and transphobic abuse, or are a victim of transphobic crime.
