NTPA Working for better Transgender UnderstandingToday's Date - 17/04/09The National Trans (gender) Police Association took another step this month in their inaugural meeting with members of the transgender community in Manchester. The NTPA offers support to all officers and staff within the Police Service who identify with a gender identity condition. The NTPA are also looking to foster a better contact between the Transgender community and the wider police service. The meeting was held at Greater Manchester Police training base at Sedgley Park, and was attended by many transgender campaigners from the North West, and also by officers and staff that are working with those small groups in Greater Manchester, and surrounding counties. Dru Willcock, Chair of the NTPA said It was a great success, and we hope to see further meetings between us and the community in the coming months. It is hoped that this work will culminate when the NTPA will take a lead role in helping police Sparkle, Europes largest Transgender celebration later this year. GMP have successfully policed the event for the last four years and we want to work with them to show the community that the trans community are in all areas of policing. Also that we have a voice in the service to help officers at all levels understand the community, are more comfortable and so can develop a safer community as a whole. We are working on producing a good practice guide for officers to assist them during this weekend and in general policing across the whole country commented Karen Henderson Secretary for the NTPA and Liaison between the association and the event. Sparkle takes place between Friday 10th July and Sunday 12th July 2009, in central Manchester. Internet: www.ntpa.org.uk General Contact Information
